I am Tan Xu Heng, a software engineer by profession, and a full-stack developer who greatly shares passion in other arts, including music. Continual pursuit of innovation and excellence has simply defined my career toward making maximum use of technology in finding solutions to complex problems and achieving increased efficiency in the delivery of operations.
I had an opportunity to volunteer with The Boys' Brigade (BB), the oldest uniform organization for youth in the world. Herein, I designed and developed a comprehensive information management system that used ReactJs and BootstrapCSS. This very platform was able to revolutionize our annual appraisal processes and the very tracking of badges, indeed helping members plan their award trajectory in a very big way. Realizing the potential of being able to make the project more robust and scalable, I developed the whole project further, even using TypeScript, Material UI and TailwindCSS, and later deployed it more reliably onto the cloud infrastructure of Cloudflare and Render.com. This has been very helpful in not only smooth running of our weekly programs but also to us administratively in keeping records of attendance and uniform orders.
VueJs and NuxtJs: In my career, profession-wise, I have been able to develop a full-stack application independently. Most notably, I developed a Single Sign-On (SSO) package that ended up reducing the development time for other teams from 40 hours to a mere 12 hours. These efforts achieved not only optimized processes in authentication but also security through enhanced role-based authorizations. Also, I had a CMS developed, based on Notion, but the intention was to enable the marketing team to be the ones managing the website directly—hence the agility and efficiency in everything done. My initiative with the integration of customer WhatsApp support into Slack, allow the data team to train our own GPT. This allow us to reduce the support response time by around 25% and helped us serve customers much faster and more effectively.
I learned and prepared from my tenure at BB how to inculcate discipline and esprit de corps (team spirit), the way of shaping towards challenges with critical thinking and a focus on users. My leadership skills further honed over years of guiding teams towards common objectives, and my technical expertise led me toward continual learning in pursuit of new knowledge and perspectives within the changing landscape of technologies.
